Five Common Examples

Share five things you’re good at.

These can be your hobbies, I guess. Because we are usually good at things we enjoy. Right? But we can also be bad at things we like. Now let me explain with five common examples:

Cooking. Nothing is better than homemade food— I totally agree. I love cooking and baking, but the outcome isn’t always consistent. Sometimes I receive a surprising Wow, and other times, I get something like, ‘ have you changed something?’ Which, by the way, doesn’t mean food was awful but… not as nice.

Walking. Such a simple exercise that costs nothing! I enjoy it, but my consistency is around average. In summer, it can go above average, but in winter, with its strong gusts and heavy showers, exercising feels cosier indoors.

Listening. They say listening is a life skill. Well.. that depends of course on concentration. I enjoy it, but sometimes, the mind can’t help wandering into a book, a phone call, or even an old memory. And, in the end, it all depends on the narrative, and on the narrator.

Imagination. I suppose most readers and writers are good at imagination. Otherwise, they wouldn’t enjoy either. But, it’s important to draw a line between reality and imagination. For example, the first man who imagined the possibility of flying was so brave and clever, yet his imagination wasn’t enough for a successful trial. Unfortunately he didn’t survive.

Learning. Nowadays with all this technology and so many resources, learning is available to almost everyone. One has just to know the right option and the direction to follow. I have mine, which goes well with my own rythm and preferences.

Well… even if one is good at something, it doesn’t mean they are perfect. But, at least one should try.

With hope and peace,

A Craving Hobby!

Are there any activities or hobbies you’ve outgrown or lost interest in over time?

Some hobbies can depend on mood, taste, company – and, more importantly, the moment. Have you ever noticed that? I have.

I love colouring with pens and pencils, but I’ve rarely tried using brushes. I believe all children enjoy colouring at different levels; it somehow captures their attention and relax their mood. Colouring is the hobby I crave, like special things at special moments, shared with very special people.

So, in my childhood, I loved and enjoyed colouring. But as we grow, some old hobbies are pushed aside and eventually  become abandoned. But, they don’t completely vanish.

During my pregnancy, I craved colouring. A month after my husband and moved to the UK for his postgraduate studies, I bought children’s colouring books and pens.  I coloured them all in no time, selected my favourites, cut them out, and decorated our walls with them. They added life, beauty, and much fun to our small flat. However, I didn’t crave it in my second pregnancy, and it was pushed aside by the demands of life.

My faded hobby revived and was full of fun when God blessed me with a daughter after my two boys. We used to colour together and challenge each other to see who could make the best colouring. However, as we discovered other favourite hobbies, colouring was once again pushed aside.

They say colouring is an effective alternative to meditation, and it truely is. It extends time and makes every moment more enjoyable, putting all your worries and fears at the back of your mind. Perhaps that’s why you might crave it at special moments with special people.

A hidden talent!

What’s a secret skill or ability you have or wish you had?

I believe every one of us has some hidden talents. Sometimes, the discovery of your hidden talents struck you all of a sudden. Oh, really, how I haven’t realised that I was talented in so and so; you said and regret the time you’ve wasted without developing it. But, sometimes, you also just keep doing special things unaware of how much you’ve been blessed with such a talent. The good news is that in any case, you are having at least one hidden talent which others will recognise about you even if you can’t admit that yourself.

Writing was my favorite hobby since I started going to school. I used to help my mother writing letters to her family as it would have taken her so long to write any and her handwriting was not good. My older splings were not interested, but I was. Year after year, my writing compositions scored the highest marks of the class for my school grades. Over all my school years, writing was such a hobby, one  of  things I like and am good at.

Then, one day on my second year at university, our Arabic tutor assigned us a task to write a piece of our own choice. Arabic was one of the compulsory modules. He gave us one week to finish the assignment with the promise that the best fives would be published in that year’s Arabic textbook. Our essays shouldn’t be more than one page.

My father had passed away on the same year, just a month before I received this writing task. Wthout thinking twice; I chose a title and poured my feelings during these days into the one page piece. Two weeks later, I received my friends’ congratulations as my piece was published in our Arabic textbook. “The Fate We Can’t Escape!” My eyes fixed on my work title, couldn’t believe I had made it.

Writing has been my hidden talent which I’ve come to love and work on year after year.

Reverie

What activities do you lose yourself in?

Whatever the thing you like, you will lose yourself in it. A book, a song, a recipe, a sport, a picture, a movie, …. . You’re losing youself because that thing makes you feel better, makes you happy, and, in some cases, makes you be yourself.

Do you know that some people lose themselves in talking. Oh, yes, some have the ability to talk nonstop. They lose themselves and others, and even if you interrupt, they don’t intentinally ignore you but just could not hear other voices.

But, that question also reminds me of my daughter a year or two ago when she found it hard to fell asleep. My advice was to think of pleasant thoughts. Lose yourself in reverie, I told her. Reverie is like a pause that can block unpleasant things and open a winow for pleasant ones, and that’s all free and for just a few seconds.

Youtube channel

I no longer watch TV; all of my favourite programmes, movies, songs, even my daughter’s favourite cartoons are available on youtube.

It’s also fun to know about others and watch their experience, their success, and their business. I really believe they should be so brave to do that.

My son has started his youtube channel, I think it was about five years ago. Football, he thought it would be all about. But now he is sharing some new interests.

This is the link for his channel; check it and if you like, subscribe to his channel.
