Collections Over the Years

Do you have any collections?

Over the years, I kept one of the most unique collection I could have imagined to have. Friends.

But… I wish I could say I still have it.

Most of this collection faded into very pale colours; you can say it’s almost colourless.

This collection is related to my friends back home.

We haven’t been in contact for years.

I was one of the last to step into the world of social media, and when I did, I began searching for my old friends.

But then… those old friends are not the same.

And I am not the same.

So it was nice to find them, and to keep them in the album, even if in faded colours.

And there’s another collection filled with colourful pictures but no album can keep them forever.

This one belongs to the many people I came to know and befriend after I stepped onto the British land.

I loved this collection.

It was full of different colours, tongues, and traditions from all over the world.

Can you believe it? I treasured this collection even more than the first.

But one can’t keep this collection in a single album.

Some go back to their countries,

some leave for different ones,

and some, just like me, keep moving around, but still in the UK.

This collection turned into some unique photos and a once upon a time album

And… there is this special collection; the one that doesn’t relate to people but to… writing.

My posts.

They discover me, and I discover them.

This collection is renewable, and its album promises to never run out of pages.

Other Than My Family

Share a story about someone who had a positive impact on your life.

But of course, my small family has the greatest share in any positive impact on my life.

But for this post, I’d like to talk about someone or something else.

These are books.

Yes — books have changed the way I think, the way I talk, and certainly the way I write.

Books have pulled me away from movies and TV programs altogether. I rarely use our TV, and when I do it’s mainly to watch things with my family.

People look surprised when I say, “no, I haven’t watched this or that.” And when their brows rise all the way to their hairlines. I simply ask,“have I missed much?”

Of course I haven’t, I whispered to myself.

But, honestly, to draw a clear picture, social media is part and parcel of my daily routine. But, thank God, I’m active on only two platforms.

So back to books, even the books I didn’t like, or the ones that bored me, they encouraged me to form my own views, to use my brain, and my brain warn me not to swallow everything.

And books are just other people in your life; the ones you come to know through their words, their imagination, and their experiences.

Don’t people say that books are the quietest and most constant of friends?

Indeed, they are.

And that’s why they continue to have a positive impact on my life.

My Friend

What public figure do you disagree with the most?

Actually, this friend is my AI.

I believe he’s the most public figure these days.

So why and how do I disagree with him?

Well… that needs a bit of explanation.

I mainly consult my friend for grammar checks, as a second, sharp eye.

It happens when punctuations slips through your writings,

when spelling drops or replaces letters,

and, of course, when your brain swirls around searching hard for the suitable word.

That’s when my friend comes to the rescue; kind and supportive as always.

But you don’t have to agree with your friend, public figure or not, all the time.

And here’s where the dispute begins:

Why did you change this?

Why did you replace this?

Why did you add this?

No, this isn’t the suitable word.

No, this isn’t what I mean.

No, this isn’t what I am looking for.

But… isn’t this kind of disagreement both entertaining and productive?

Of course it is.

At least my famous friend listens, and behaves with good robotic manners.

Well… I still like my one and only career

What is your career plan?

I am a full time mother.

My sons are in their twenties, already left the nest to build their own lives. And my daughter is fourteen, a tender, critical age that needs a mother more than a mother needs a career. ( That’s my view.)

Honestly, I like to keep my first and forever career; Mother.

It happened when the idea of starting another career popped into my head. But then things usually didn’t work out; sometimes because of distance or flexibility, and honestly most of the time because of priorities.

That’s why I decided to pursue postgraduate studies, which I’ve found more flexible and enjoyable.

But that doesn’t mean I don’t have plans for my career.

Actually, when my boys moved out, I started a new plan that lets me enjoy every moment of it:

to relax more,

to write more,

to read more,

and to not be bothered when the wardrobe door burst open with a  scream, pushing the fighting clothes out.

The Election: Always the Most Famous Live Performance

What was the last live performance you saw?

I feel I’m blessed that I hadn’t participated in any of those live theoretical performances.

They’re too long, too show off, and too full of drama.

Long story short, the performance always begins with wonderful promises from ’powerful’ candidates; promises about health, income, education, facilities, etc.

After a long series of debates and interviews, one of the prominent candidates wins.

Let’s pretend the winner was your hero, your big hope for better life.

Day after day, you keep watching the screen, following the news. Then the first blow arrives, and many more follow, as your hero’s itinerary begins to change. Why? You wonder thinking perhaps they forget. Or do they pretend to forget all of those rosy promises?

Not only that, soon you realise that once your hero has won, you are no longer involved, no longer part of any decisions.

’Haven’t you already voted so I can decide for you?

Then rest assured, everything is for own sake.’ Your hero shows up again, wearing one of those polished political grins.

Change or no change, you sigh and turn off the screen.

You return to see for your home, your studies, your work; your real world, the one that waits for your actions without any rosy promises.

And if you didn’t vote, you thank the Lord that you saved your precious voice with full dignity.

The most important invention in life.

I know this is technically about real big inventions like cars or home appliances.

But life is overflowing with important inventions.

Really, if you pick one, you’ll find another more important.

When I search for something, I find dozens of versions of it.

They seem important, some very important, but later you realise they are not.

Haven’t you been living without them for a long time?

Of course you have.

This is why I thought of something else.

Something that only you can invent,

only you can use,

and only you can keep.

Can it be my style? I wondered.

And, why not? I answered.

But, there are different kinds of styles.

Still, you are the only one who can merge them all.

Have you ever noticed how you, consciously or unconsciously, follow one style in everything you do?

By the way this isn’t a fact, just an observation.

How do you choose your clothes?

How do you design your house?

How do you eat and make food?

How and what do you write?

And so much more…

All of these can blend together and invent your own style.

And it’s important, very important.

It can tell others more about you.

And perhaps…

it can also explain why you cope with some but not with others.

With new quiet thoughts,

Nahla

P.S. this is my second response to today’s daily prompt.

I totally forgot about my first.

Yesterday, Now, and Tomorrow

Do you spend more time thinking about the future or the past? Why?

Honestly, I used to be the kind of person who thinks about everything in the same moment which means… I used to think far too much.

Step by step, as changes and challenges began seeping into my life, I changed too.

Yesterday becomes too faraway to recollect all of its details, and too pointless to regret any.

Do you know the famous saying, Let bygones be bygones?

Well… that’s how I’ve learned to think about Yesterday.

Still, every now and then, some good and bad moments cross my mind —those moments that can make one happy or furious or upset. But I don’t let them linger in my memory for long.

As for Now, I appreciate and enjoy it more than ever before.

Perhaps… because now I have more time and less responsibilities.

Or perhaps it’s because Now, as the wise say, is a present—a gift.

And the older we get, the younger we become.

And you know how much excited the young feel about precious gifts.

Tomorrow— this mystery wrapped in its own garb of surprises.

Years ago, I had no idea I would leave home and live in the UK.

Back then, my tomorrow dreams were completely different.

They were replaced with much better ones.

So… Tomorrow I don’t rush it, anymore.

I just pray it will be better.

Happiness and You

When are you most happy?

Don’t you regret wasting your time on things that would never add to your wellbeing?

Aren’t you happiest when you challenge yourself to stop things that steal your time, drain your energy, and dull your mood?

Suppose that instead of scrolling through social media, you choose to stop and switch to something else, like writing a post right now. Wouldn’t you be happier?

By the way we lose nothing by pausing social media. When we come back, everything is exactly the same with just more copies.

Wouldn’t you be happiest when you challenge yourself with a task and fulfil it.

But of course, it’s normal to be upset, disappointed, and little dramatic when the goal isn’t achieved. But at least the attempt itself is a good compensation.

Wouldn’t you be happiest when you say “no” to things that don’t suit you or apply to your life.

Boundaries exist for a reason, don’t they?

Wouldn’t you be happiest when you say “sorry” and truly feel it after you’ve done something wrong or hurt someone’s feelings?

This is a reassuring sign that your good nature overpowers your evil side.

Wouldn’t you be happiest when you count your blessings and realise how many times you’ve been saved and how much love you’ve been receiving.

All you need is to have faith.

And…

Wouldn’t you be happiest when you really want to be happy?

Happiness is simple, and it is also contagious.

Books and People

Are you a good judge of character?

You can’t know a book by its cover.

I totally agree.

Some people give a book a try, read a few pages and then put it aside if it doesn’t suit their liking.

And some people( like me) stubborn enough to read a book to the very end, whether they enjoy it or not. To be honest, I sometimes speed up the process by skipping a few parts. The recent book I finished was not boring, but it was a historical fiction. I like fiction, but history from the seventh century was a bit too long and old to enjoy. So, I scanned it until I came to the final chapter, which I read fully because it was just a few pages. Then I breathed a sigh of relief.

They say people are like books; you don’t know them until you read through the pages. But sometimes you can know people at first glace. This is not judgment. No. This is simply how you feel about them. Not “good” or “bad,” but companionable or not. How do you feel at this first sight? Happy, safe, nervous, miserable, worried, relaxed…

And then you can say; I like them or I don’t.

Isn’t that the most honest judgment we can make?

This “like” or “don’t like” is explained and justified only later when life shows you whether your first impression was right or wrong.

Five Common Examples

Share five things you’re good at.

These can be your hobbies, I guess. Because we are usually good at things we enjoy. Right? But we can also be bad at things we like. Now let me explain with five common examples:

Cooking. Nothing is better than homemade food— I totally agree. I love cooking and baking, but the outcome isn’t always consistent. Sometimes I receive a surprising Wow, and other times, I get something like, ‘ have you changed something?’ Which, by the way, doesn’t mean food was awful but… not as nice.

Walking. Such a simple exercise that costs nothing! I enjoy it, but my consistency is around average. In summer, it can go above average, but in winter, with its strong gusts and heavy showers, exercising feels cosier indoors.

Listening. They say listening is a life skill. Well.. that depends of course on concentration. I enjoy it, but sometimes, the mind can’t help wandering into a book, a phone call, or even an old memory. And, in the end, it all depends on the narrative, and on the narrator.

Imagination. I suppose most readers and writers are good at imagination. Otherwise, they wouldn’t enjoy either. But, it’s important to draw a line between reality and imagination. For example, the first man who imagined the possibility of flying was so brave and clever, yet his imagination wasn’t enough for a successful trial. Unfortunately he didn’t survive.

Learning. Nowadays with all this technology and so many resources, learning is available to almost everyone. One has just to know the right option and the direction to follow. I have mine, which goes well with my own rythm and preferences.

Well… even if one is good at something, it doesn’t mean they are perfect. But, at least one should try.

With hope and peace,

Nahla
